Depending on the nature of your business, pest control may be vitally important. If you neglect this issue, you could run into a range of problems. As well as the practical difficulties associated with infestations, you run the risk of damaging your company’s reputation.
Thankfully, it’s now easier than ever to get your hands on all the pest control products you need. As long as you make good use of these and adopt a systematic approach, you should find it straightforward to prevent infestations.
Milling plant closed due to mouse activity
If you ever need reminding about the significance of this issue, you can simply turn to the news headlines. Cases of pest infestation in commercial premises are often reported in the press.
For example, environmental health offices recently closed a herb and spice milling plant in the Midldands after they spotted evidence of mouse activity throughout the premises. Leicester City Council officials served a prohibition notice in response to the discovery.
As well as denting the organisation’s profits, this will no doubt have an impact on its reputation. After all, customers expect the most stringent levels of hygiene these days and any lapses may count as a black mark against businesses.
In court
During a hearing at Leicester Magistrates’ Court, Caroline Frith, prosecuting on behalf of the council, stated that the firm represented an imminent risk to public health. She added: “The company mills herbs and spices and sells them on to other businesses and shops, which in turn sell them on to the public.
“The presence of mice led the officers to issue an emergency prohibition order.”
Warning
The manager of the milling plant had been warned by food safety officers that formal action might be taken if he did not eradicate the vermin problem and he was informed that the environmental health team would revisit the site soon afterwards.
However, when they went back to the site, they found more evidence of mouse activity.
Commenting on this, environmental health officer Alison Cadmore said: “There has been a substantial amount of cleaning but we were still finding mouse droppings on pallets and in the cleaning area. The cleaning requires further attention. We need further pest control to be satisfied that any infestation has been eradicated.”
