Harry Potter Spider Discovered

A spider found in South-West India bearing an uncanny resemblance to the famous Gryffindor Sorting Hat has been found. Named Eriovixia gryffindori in tribute to the owner of the fictional hat, author J.K. Rowling has tweeted her delight in response to the curious find.

The spider which is just 7mm long blends in to the background by looking like foliage in an attempt to hide from predators.

One of the researchers who found the spider is in fact a Harry potter fan. Javed Ahmed remarked, “We were searching the area (when) we bumped into the spider. When we found it we decided that we were going to name it after the sorting hat.”

The spider belongs to the Eriovixia genus of arachnids and is one of 21 species belonging to that family. Usually the different types of this genus are found in Asia, Africa, New Guinea and the Philippines.
